Contacts User Guide

The next time an app asks for access to your Contacts, my advice is to immediately deny. Then, later, decide if you trust the app. These days, trust is hard to earn. You can fetch contacts using the contact store (CNContact Store), which represents the user's contacts database. The contact store encapsulates all I/O operations and is responsible for fetching and saving of contacts and groups.

View individual contacts

  • See a contact: In the list of contacts, select a contact. Contact information is shown on the right.

  • See a contact in a separate window: Double-click a contact in the list, or select a contact and choose Card > Open in Separate Window.

Ask Siri. Say something like: “Show me Jane’s information.” Learn how to ask Siri.

View groups of contacts

In the Contacts app on your Mac, do any of the following:

  • See groups: Choose View > Show Groups to see groups in the sidebar.

  • See the contacts in a group: Select a group or Smart Group in the sidebar.

  • See which groups a contact belongs to: Select a contact, then press and hold the Option key. Groups that include the contact are highlighted in blue in the sidebar.

  • See all contacts: Select All Contacts in the sidebar. This list compiles contacts from different accounts into one list.

  • See contacts in a network directory service: Select the directory in the sidebar, then search for a contact.

To change how contact names appear and are sorted in the list, or to not show suggested contacts found in other apps, choose Contacts > Preferences, click General, then deselect the related options. To learn more about the options, click the Help button at the bottom of the pane.

Tip: Quickly search your Mac for emails, messages, events, and documents that mention a contact: Control-click the contact in the list, then choose the Spotlight command.

Gather contacts from all your accounts

If you keep contacts in other internet accounts—such as iCloud, Google, or Yahoo—you can access all of them in Contacts.

Create groups automatically

Create a Smart Group by identifying something that some of your contacts have in common. For example, you could create a Smart Group called “Book Club” that includes any contact with “book” in the Note field of their card.

Show it on a map
